Best Fishing Spots in and Around Kuala Lumpur: A Local’s Day Trip Guide

If you’re looking for a place to fish in the city of Kuala Lumpur, your options are basically limited to lakes and parks. You can google for those that are closest to where you are. Most of these lakes and ponds are under the management of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and will require license and permits to fish in them.

The adjacent cities of Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam also offer some options under their own jurisdictions.

Stocked or Pay Ponds can offer convenience and a quick fix for city folks. And some of them can actually be quite fun offering big  exotic fish and their own sets of challenges.

Some Stocked or Pay Pond Options

Empangan Air Kuning (EAK)

Probably one of my personal favourite stocked pond and in the most natural settings as it is surrounded by wild jungles.

Main species to target here are the hard-pulling pacu.

Distance from KL: About 1 hour drive

Natural Exotic Fish Fishing Pond – Behrang

Huge Mekong and chaophraya catfish here. Other species are often stocked as well.

Distance from KL: About 2 hours drive

Exotic Fishing Park – Batu Arang

Plenty of huge chaophraya catfish here. Other species are often stocked as well.

Distance from KL: About 2 hours drive

LS Fishing Pond

Saltwater ponds with giant grouper, gt, mangrove jack, barramundi, and other species.

Distance from KL: About 1.5 hours drive

Jugra Saltwater Pond

Mainly barramundi but also has gt.

Distance from KL: About 1.5 hours drive

What other day trip options are there?

Some options will require traveling to neighbouring states meaning more traveling time. Distance from KL: 2 to 3 Hours drive

Sikang (Malayan/Burmese Trout)

Yes, there are “trout” in hot tropical Malaysia. The sikang doesn’t get huge, a 30-40cm fish is considered a big fish. Fishing involved wading in shallow rivers casting small lures or flies.

Distance from KL: About 2 hr 30 min

Giant Snakehead (Toman)

There’s a lake about 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur that holds decent population of the respectable ferocious toman. This involves fishing from boat. Fishing method is lure casting or fly fishing.

Peacock Bass

Another very popular target species with local anglers. Peacock bass are scattered around west Malaysia and because they are frequently targeted, fishing pressure is high. Promising locations often changes but there are often places within 2 to 3 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Summary

The above is a list of locations I can think of at the time of posting. Google for the latest information or get in touch with me and I’ll try my best to help.

How Do I Get To These Fishing Locations?

I can guide you in some of the places above if you like and I’d also be happy to refer you to a local guide/boatman if there’s one so you can make your own arrangements.
