Mongolia Trip Packing List

Going on a trip in Mongolia? Then this packing list will be helpful. Even more so if it involves fishing!

ESSENTIALS

  • Passport 
  • Flight tickets 
  • Head lamp, torch light / camping lamp
  • Toiletries 
  • Hat/cap + spare
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Cold weather clothing to suit season
  • Polarized sunglasses 
  • Poncho / rain jacket / windbreaker
  • Camera
  • Mosquito/insect repellent 
  • Medication 
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Pocket money
  • Weatherproof backpack/fishing vest

3wt setup above: Going light is a lot of fun but can be a challenge in windy conditions as most of the rivers are wide open and when casting larger flies

FLY FISHING GEAR

  • Rods 5-8wt (some prefer 8-10wt for casting big flies for taimen)
  • Cold water fly lines (Weight Forward Floating lines preferably) 
  • Line cleaners
  • Leaders and tippets (6-12lb for trout, 16-20lb for taimen)
  • Flies – hopper, klinkhammer, nymph, streamer (see list below)
  • Wader 
  • Wading boots

Spinning/baitcast gear can also be used to cast lures and poppers

What Flies For Mongolia?

  • Hoppers #6, #8 hooks
  • Chernobyl ants, Fat Albert, size 6
  • Nymphs size 12, 14
  • Large streamers for taimen size 1/0 – 3/0
  • Mouse patterns
  • Dry flies, emergers – Klinkhammer size 6, 8, 10

FISHING GEAR NOTES

  • Pack a rod for small dry flies, another for larger flies such as hoppers, mouse, streamer.
  • Spare rod and reel
  • Dry fly and nymph for grayling 
  • Streamer, nymph, hopper, gurgler for lenok and amur trout
  • Big gurgler, popper, mouse and big streamer for taimen. Lenok and Amur trout will also eat these flies.

OPTIONAL 

The following may be listed as optional but they can come in handy and good to have with you.

  • Sleeping bag
  • Fly tying tools and materials 
  • Landing net
  • Spare rods
  • Spare fly lines
  • Fishing gloves

WEATHER 

Summer in Mongolia – June to July 

  • Daytime temperature between 15°C – 30°C
  • Evening and nighttime temperatures between 5°C – 10°C

Autumn in Mongolia – August to September 

  • Daytime temperature between 10°C – 20°C
  • Evening and nighttime temperatures between 1°C – 5°C

Fall/winter in Mongolia – late September to October 

  • Daytime temperature between 0°C – 10°C
  • Evening and nighttime temperatures between 0°C to -30°C
