Sek and his Rompin Sailfish on Fly Video

When battling big fish, you need to have control over your quarry. A fish that holds the upper hand means a longer fight time and a few things will result from that.

  1. Longer fight time means more chances for something to go wrong or equipment to fail
  2. Longer fight time means a more stressed out fish that will be released less healthy

Watch how Sek handles this sailfish on fly. He keeps the rod low to maximise the use of the backbone nearer to the rod butt section.

This way he has more leverage on the fish as the rod section towards the tip is just too soft and bends too much. It will not give the angler much control over the fish if he holds the rod at too high an angle.

This technique not only applies to fly fishing but conventional rods as well.

Gear used:

  • Sage Salt 12wt
  • Hatch Finatic 9 Plus
