A reader asked what ‘lure’ we use for fishing sebarau (Hampala macrolepidota in scientific lingo or Hampala Barb by IGFA) in Malaysia. The answer is we use many artificial lures, especially spoons. But one very successful and trilling way we catch them is by fly fishing and the go-to fly is the split-tail.
The split-tail fly is created by Nick of Tacklebox Adventures and a must have in the fly box when fishing for sebarau whether in Royal Belum or elsewhere. I have personally caught toman or giant snakehead with the split-tail fly.
The split-tail fly mimics the fry of the toman which is fairly easy prey for the super-fast pack of hunting sebarau.
I will post up a how-to-tie video of the split-tail fly as soon as I can.
