The best time to catch snakehead is during the early and late part of the day.
The worst time possible would be midday when it is the hottest. During this time of the day the Tomans may still be seen on the surface gulping down air but they don’t bite as good as during dawn or dusk.
Jurassic Game Fishing Pond
Bob and I are on a tight schedule though and chose to fish the Jurassic Game Fishing Pond that is adjacent to the Exotic Fish Pond after the morning session of fishing.
Since we have to get up real early the next morning to go peacock bass fishing, we decided to go ahead and try to catch a couple of fish anyway.
Fast and furious or slow and steady?
The general rule of thumb applies when fishing for these two snakeheads species. They are the toman responds more to faster strips of the fly (or lure) whereas if you allow the fly to sink to the bottom and do a slow retrieve, you will usually be rewarded by a haruan (striped snakehead) strike.
Snakehead fishing from 12pm to 3pm?
At this hour of the day when the sun is directly overhead even the locals find it hard to stay out in the open continuously. Frequent breaks were taken to allow the body temperature to lower down before we overheat.
Bob is a real trooper. At 65 this year and coming from temperate Sydney, Australia, which have much cooler temperatures – it is great to see himself enjoying himself catching fish after fish even in these conditions.
