Cobia (Rachycentron canadum)

Local names: Haruan tasik, toman laut.

Other common names include black kingfish, black salmon, ling, lemonfish, crabeater, prodigal son, black bonito.

Can grow to more than 60kg (130 pounds) and up to 2 meters (6 feet) in length.

We get quite a few of them in Malaysia waters and they are a great fish to catch. The cobia is a hard fighting and fearless fish. Many a times swimming up to the boat to satisfy their curiosity, usually in a small school. We have also seen them biting our props!

One even gave me a fright when it suddenly appeared from under the boat while I was leaning over the side to wash my hands.

The cobia have a huge appetite and will not hesitate to take baits, lures or jigs.

Some seem to love the way they taste. How do you prepare and cook a cobia?
