How does Bass respond to sound, is loud better or is subtle and more natural better?

According to Dr. Keith Jones, Bass being top dog predators in their environment tend to throw caution to the wind and will be attracted to and thus inspect most sound. And the way Bass inspect the object that is the source of the sound is by using, what else, its mouth.
