Fishy Facts: CAN FISH HEAR?

Big Queenfish

Fish does not have ears and thus cannot hear us. That’s good news right?

The actual fact is fish do have internal ears in their head but they are next to useless. But they ‘listen’ for vibrations that travels through water using their lateral lines along the length of their body. And vibration travels extremely efficiently through water. In fact, sound (vibration) travels 9 times faster through water than air.

So the good news is we can talk while we’re fishing but tramping, banging, clapping, any loud noise may spook the fish.
