Best App for The Traveling Angler

There’s the saying “to travel is to live,” and to me, it’s so nice to relive the moments years later from our travels and adventures. And here is one app that I found quite handy to have on our smartphones.

This is not a sponsored post, and I’m not paid to review this app. In fact, I had never even heard about this app until Dizzy, a friend who is currently having the time of his life fly fishing all over South America for one whole year, told me about it.

The app is called Polarsteps. I’m not really sure how old this app is, but I only came to know about it in early 2024.

When Dizzy told me about it, I was initially skeptical about using it mainly for two reasons. The first reason, I think, is the name of the app itself: Polarsteps. I’m not sure why the name is such, but the first thing that came to mind was the North Pole or the South Pole, not exactly places where I do any of my fishing travels. The second reason that made me a little hesitant to install another app on my phone was that I’m already rather overwhelmed with all the productivity and social apps that I need to keep up with almost on a daily basis. I’m sure many of you reading this can relate to that.

First Spin Of The App

Not long after first checking out the app, I had a fishing trip to Sabah, Borneo, and I thought, why not give the app that got Dizzy so excited a spin? And here’s my impression after giving it a try.

What’s nice about this app is it will automatically record your steps for you in the app. So, you don’t basically have to arrive at a destination, pull out the phone, open the app, and key in your location details and stuff. The app automatically does all that for you.

All you have to do is at the end of the day or maybe even at the end of the trip, look at the app and just add in the small details that you choose and select the suggested photos, and you are done.

I like the fact that it doesn’t require a lot of input from me.

One of the features of this app is it will create your photo book from your travel. It will automatically design the book for you, suggest pictures, titles, and it will also add in the little details like the location, altitudes, things that we will probably not add ourselves. We may not even remember all these little things.

So, this book, if you are in Europe and somewhere close by, they can ship it to you. Everything is in Euros, so in my case, I’m long-distance away, so the shipping will kill me. So, it’s a nice feature to have but probably not something that I’ll make use of myself. So, I’ll just use the app to record some of my fishing travels.

Another feature in the app that I have not explored too much is the guides section. What it basically is, suggestions of places to visit and things to do based on your travel location.

I think this app is quite interesting, especially for people who travel to many different countries. As for me, I’m not entirely sure yet if I’ll be using this app in the long term. Let’s see how it goes. Perhaps you can follow my progress. I’ll keep you guys updated. Thanks for reading.

Happy travels and stay safe. Cheers, Juan Wei
