Urban Fly Fishing – Canal Tilapias

What do I do when not out guiding or on fishing trips? Find a spot nearby for a quickie.

There’s a canal mere minutes from where I live that I walk by all the time but has never gotten around to cast a line into it although I’ve been living here for the past seven years.

The urge to fish it has always been there. Maybe it is too convenient and fearing I might end up spending too much time there, fishing.

Well, I finally did it one evening. Picked up my new 3wt Winston rod paired with an Orvis Battenkill II reel that I’ve never fished with before. Tied on a 4X (5lb) tippet leader, grabbed a small fly box, the hemostat and my GoPro with headmount.

There are quite a few tilapias in the water here, especially near the ‘waterfall’ where they wait for food items to get washed down and the more highly oxygenated water flows.

I had less than an hour to fish, managed 3 bites with very small dry flies. Not enough time to try more flies and I spotted some big tilapias and also carps in the water, very interesting. And I am quite sure there are some snakeheads around.
