The mahseer is a highly sought after fish species in Asia, both as a sport and food fish.
As a food fish, I personally don’t know what’s all the fuss about. It’s not a bad eating fish but it is certainly overvalued. Way way overrated and taking those who pay exorbitant fees for a meal as suckers.
As a sportfish, it is one strong fish primarily because of the environment that they live in, fast-flowing jungle rivers.
Mahseer are omnivorous and takes whatever is available i.e. feeding on both plant and animal origin, also said to at times consume toxic fruits in flooded forests, possibly making them temporarily dangerous to consume (you certainly don’t want to get sick on a jungle trip!).
Here is a preview video showing a day out mahseer fishing.
